29 October 2018.- Thirteen prestigious sommeliers took part in the extraordinary semifinal of ‘The Best International Cava Sommelier’ contest held this morning within 19th The Best Wines of Spain exhibition, organized by ‘Guía Peñín’ at IFEMA congress center in Madrid.
The winner, Josep Pelegrín, is a sommelier at the Joviat Hotel and Restaurant School and Best Sommelier of Spain in 2016. Pelegrín was awarded a 1,200 euros prize and a gold medal. In second place came Audrey Doré, sommelier at the Celler de Can Roca restaurant and Best Sommelier of Catalonia in 2017. She was awarded a 800 euros prize and a silver medal.
The jury, chaired by Francisco Gonzalez, consultant at DO Cava, included journalist Mara Sánchez; Pablo Martín, president of the Spanish Federation of Sommelier Associations (UAES); and Manuel Senante, representing the Madrid Trade Chamber and member of the Gastronomy Academy of Madrid.
Additionally, the organizers of ‘The Best International Cava Sommelier’ contest made public a correction to a mistake in the eight semifinal held in Valladolid. New medals and prizes were awarded to Javier Mayoral, sommelier at ‘Rincón de España’ restaurant as winner, and Roberto Galán, sommelier at Los Cuatro Postes hotel as finalist.
Development of the contest
During the contest, the sommeliers had to face two cavas to get a place in the finals. But first they completed a professional presentation about cava by Francisco Gonzalez, director of the Cava Regulatory Council.
Finally, participants had to submit a written test on the world of cava and, right after that, they took part in a blind taste trying to decipher the cava in each glass. In addition, the sommeliers were able to discover the bond between cava and the gastronomy, learning which food combines better with sparkling wines and looking at their versatility when trying to balance them.
The Best International Cava Sommelier is a biennial contest that will be held in 11 Spanish cities with international semifinals in Belgium. It has the goal of collaborating in the formation of wine professionals and the professionalization of cava knowledge. The final will be held in Barcelona in 2019.
