Vilafranca del Penedès, July 13, 2017- Isabel García Tejerina, Minister of Agriculture, announced in her closing speech of the II Premios Excelencia Cava, the name of the first twelve Parajes Calificados.
The Minister explained that “the Ministry had proceeded with great diligence that the Cavas de Paraje Calificado became a reality and that the ministerial order to publish it in the Official Bulletin of the State had already been signed”. Afterwards, she announced the names of the first Parajes Calificados, where this exceptional cava can be elaborated, the Cava de Paraje Calificado.
In this first stage, twelve Parajes Calificados have been approved from nine different companies that have obtained this recognition after a thorough selection.
The Cava de Paraje Calificado is that one whose origin comes from a smaller area – Paraje (place) – of DO Cava, labelled as such by its unique soil and climate. In addition, both the production of grapes in the vineyard and the wine and the cava in the cellar must comply with a strict and specific list of demands and check that all meet the standards of a rigorous protocol managed by the technical services of the Cava Regulatory Board.
The process until the final approval of these Cavas de Paraje Calificado has been long and complex. The proposal approved by the Plenary of the Council was accepted by the Ministry, and was included in the Act 6/2015. In June 2016, the new category “Cava de Paraje Calificado” is solemnly presented to the sector and to the national and international press in the Palau de la Música Catalana.
Once the Royal Decree which develops their requirements was published in March 2017, the final documentation about the places candidates approved by companies with advice and thorough control of the Technical Services of the Regulatory Board was received and the goodwill of the dossiers and the organoleptic exam verified by an expert committee, they were sent to the Ministry for the final approval and ratification as the first Cavas de Paraje Calificados.
The specific tasting committee to this category is made up of:

Once the tasting had been carried out, the requests to the Ministry of Agriculture had been sent to be examined and consequently proceed to its recognition. The result has been:

The next step is the proper labelling of the bottles to be able to give the control distinctives of DO Cava specially created for this category. From this moment on, they may be sold in all markets.
The applications process to Cava de Paraje Calificado is open to nominations in the second stage.
